Tell me a little about your journey into the kind of music you do. What influenced you and pushed you to the heavy alternative side of sound?
I knew I was different from the beginning, always stood out – decided to drop college and pursue music since it was always around me everywhere I went. I am a metalhead at heart & always have been, that’s where I formed my first band and as of obvious we didn’t hold up, a lot of maintenance for a 17 year old kid and I don’t like relying on others much as it interferes with my vision that no one can replicate… In the end; decided to start making my own solo music as a new path and it was not very serious. It was only ‘til I did my first show in front of 150+ people I realized I really do have potential for this and went hard with it since. I’ve been influenced by crossover genres, trap metal is where I started out, XXXtentacion, Scarlxrd, Ghostemane, Bones, Pouya, Xavier Wulf …And literally any other rapper in the alternative lane is what gave me inspiration as of starters and as I grew I created this signature cadence, you know it’s Scotty when you hear him.
What’s the scene looking like over in the UK right now? Shows, rising artists and more.
As we all know Covid has not been pleasant for us creatives, not much really gone on but since we’re gradually getting back in the groove of things, show’s are starting to pop and the music scene here is buzzing. Getting to perform at my second home Camden Assembly next Wednesday is where it all started. So revisiting is gonna be like a movie. I was shocked to find an ongoing underground scene in the UK, I really thought it was non-existent. As world wide influence, the UK is on a rise in general when it comes to Rap we’re finally getting our recognition and I can’t wait to get up there with the rest.
In what ways have lockdowns/quarantine helped or hurt your journey in music?
In all honesty I went through many ups and downs as I’m sure most have, re-working my sound I created “Punkboy Dracula Vol. 2” which was the last of my heavy alternative style and moved onto a more mainstream vibe as I felt I was putting on a bit of a character. Now I come through way more authentic. Was a tough time however, I skyrocketed in stats during the first half of lockdown which was insane for me considering no social interaction – no shows.
Is there a story behind your name? Or maybe a reason behind it?
The ‘Overdose’ in my name has been questioned by almost everyone that finds out about me, it’s a reminder to stay clean from drugs which is surprising for so many. I like to stay responsible with head screwed on. We all know everybody in this scene love their drugs… It’s also a play on my surname ‘O’Donoghue’. People have always called me Scotty OD which is also of course… short for Overdose.
You told me before this interview that you don’t classify yourself specifically as trap metal. Any particular reason for that?
I feel like the term Trap Metal was always misleading. It’s not exactly what it is – any metalhead would tell you that. I honestly got tired of it as it got repetitive and the community has milked it. I had my fun with the rage stuff but now it’s all real authentic stories & emotions I throw into my music which everybody can relate to.
What artists would you kill to tour with?
I’m really open to be honest. I definitely don’t have a set of artists / bands I’d kill to perform with, all in good time. Nobody is in the same lane I’ve created so it’s difficult to answer this one. All I know is I’d die for the tour experience I wanna get on the road so bad.
What is one thing you wish you would have known in the beginning of making the Scotty Overdose project?
I’m self taught in everything I do whether that’s mixing/mastering, editing & videography, marketing etc.… And I spent months teaching myself to do all the things I do as I had no one to lend tips. It’s really took me 2 years to understand it all. There’s so many things I’ve taught to other upcoming artists around me, giving back what I always needed to hear.
Can you tell me any details about what is coming next from you?
I’ve just released my new sound of an album “Explicit” – It’s my most authentic project to date I’m most proud of. A mashup of trap / UK drill beats with a Punkboy Dracula (Nickname) twist on it and it’s the current future of my music. I’m excited about this new direction. I have a single dropping a week from now titled “Sauce” – a very cinematic experience.

I always preach mental health at my shows, as a sufferer I like to gather everyone and make sure my people are standing strong together as family. And to my fellow creatives, unapologetically strive to be yourself at all times.
