1. Thank you for taking some time to be interviewed for Trap Metal Magazine. Can you please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us your name?!
My name is Thane Ragnarsson, from Selkirk, MB, Canada.
I’m a multi-instrumentalist musician & artist. My artist name is Thänatos.
2. How long have you been making music under this project title?
I’ve been releasing music under the name Thänatos since February of 2024.
However it’s been my stage name/nickname for over a decade.
3. Who gets bragging rights for helping you get to where you are now? Who are your day ones?
My old bandmate Quin, my buddy/producer Jared (JxRxD) & James (Ginge Easy)
4. What were you doing before all this started? Did you have other notable projects before this one?
I’ve been a part of many “practice projects/bands” & cover bands. The only one of any real merit was my Blackened Death Metal band called Eveon. We never released our music, just thrashed around the Winnipeg metal scene playing live shows until we couldn’t keep the project going.
5. What can we expect from you next year? New music, visuals or tours?
I have many songs in the works, but this year I’m going to focus on releasing much higher quality music.
So I may focus on 1 or 2 solid bodies of work. I’ll also be putting a lot more effort into my online presence with visuals/videos.
No shows or tours planned. There really isn’t a scene for what I’m making where I live.
So my focus is building my brand online.
6. What are your long-term goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years. What about your end game?
One thing I know will be a constant is my output of music. My ideas & creativity are endless.
I want to perfect my video content & truly portray the stories I see in my mind using the music & visuals to capture my audience. I’d like to build a cult-like following since I know what I make is so unique/niche.
Eventually some animations &/or comics to accompany the music is another fun goal. (Lots of work)
Long term/end goals I’d love to be able to make a consistent living with my music/skills & pay the bills/live comfortably. Nothing too grandiose. Like most musicians I love being onstage, I feel alive up there!
I’d love to play sold out stadiums & festivals. However after doing this for a decade I’m much more practical with my goals.
7. With an interest in who your influences are, if you could go on tour with anyone in the world, who would be on the bill with you?
Hard to pick a few. But the line up would be something like:
Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Health, 3TEETH, Ghostemane, Mad Kelly, Death By Romy
8. What is your local music scene like? What are the pros and cons? And where do you see room for improvement?
Well my nearest city is Winnipeg MB. Everyone congregates there to play shows
(otherwise it’s all small towns disconnected by farmland) & there are different metal, punk, rock scenes. Apparently a goth scene that has events once in a while (just a DJ playing songs on stage).
There’s a hip-hop scene too, but it’s mostly some variation of boom bap or sound cloud rap type stuff.
Nothing really original. There’s a HUGE drug problem here too mixed with the music scenes.
My set got cut from a show I was supposed to play last year because kids started attacking each other outside the venue over some sort of fake gang beef.
I’m rather fed up with the music scene here. Anyone who’s ever “made it” has left this place for good or just visits their family & has no association with the music scene here.
In short, many cons & the only real pro is that there are shows happening. Room for many improvements.
9. Here at TMA we’re constantly looking for fresh talent and prospective features. If you had to choose 5 artists from your circle to put us on too, who would you choose and why?
I’ve worked my a$$ off to become the musician I am today, so I have a level of pride in what I do. For me to recommend people I have to be personally impressed & see that same level of work ethic or skill put into someone’s music. I won’t recommend most people who use/purchase “type beats” because to me they aren’t making original music. 50+ artists using the same beat with different lyrics annoys the hell out of me. So in saying that…
JxRxD makes some killer dark/scream rap with horrorcore/trap influence.
Ginge Easy makes some anti-government dark rap with a boom bap feel to it.
Loverboy Nel is rapper around here who has no particular style but has a lot of potential
as he develops.
Ryot is another rapper around here who also has a lot of potential as he develops his style.
10. As we wrap this up, is there anything else you want to add? And thank you for your time!
I appreciate you for featuring me & everyone who takes the time to read my interview.
Let it be known that I don’t subscribe to genre gatekeeping & will always be pushing the boundaries with my music to serve the song. So each one will be unique.
I make music for the outcasts among the outcasts.
